ABOUT THE SELECTED IMAGE: Galveston is Texas’ own island paradise and one way to enjoy it is by taking part in the sites, sounds, and smells of the Galveston harborside. From fresh seafood to the Elissa to evening party boats, the Galveston harbor has been the lifeblood of Galveston for over a century. One of my favorite former past times was eating shrimp poor boys at Hills on Pier 19 with my husband and daughters and watching all of the boat traffic go by. In particular, we always liked to see the Del Monte banana boats.
Mary Lou Kelso loves nothing better than giving back to her community and supporting children in the community. Her late husband of 42 years was a UTMB researcher and they have two daughters, Amy and Jennifer, a son-in-law Rob and two grandchildren, Cate and Andrew. In honor of her husband, there home was featured on Clean Galveston’s Back Garden Tour in 2011. She is president of The Friends of Moody Gardens and hosts trips such as the City to the Aquarium, the Rainforest and many others for area school classes. They have a Gala each year to help fund this educational opportunity, along with hosting a reception for the children. Additionally, she has initiated the Junior Master Gardener Program at Oppe Elementary where she worked for many years before retiring. She is a Master Gardener volunteer, part of the Oleander Society and sits on the Children and Youth Board for Galveston. She loves meeting enthusiastic friends who love to garden, support their community and make Galveston a better place to live!
